Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine invite applications for the position of Division Chief of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery. We seek a nationally recognized surgeon-scientist with a strong record of academic accomplishment, including extramural research funding, a demonstrated history of clinical trial leadership and investigator-initiated research, excellence in clinical care, and a sustained commitment to education and mentorship. The successful candidate will bring proven leadership experience in an academic environment and the vision to advance both the academic division of Surgical Oncology and system-wide surgical oncology services across Penn State Health. Academic appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor of Surgery, commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments. Position Highlights - Lead a growing, multidisciplinary Division of Surgical Oncology encompassing HPB/foregut, endocrine, breast, peritoneal surface malignancy, neuroendocrine, and skin/soft tissue oncology. - Build and expand programmatic strengths in CRS/HIPEC, neuroendocrine, and hepatobiliary surgery in collaboration with the Penn State Cancer Institute. - Drive the division’s academic mission, fostering a culture of scientific inquiry, investigator-initiated clinical and translational research, and mentorship for early-career faculty and trainees. - Expand the division’s clinical trials portfolio in partnership with the Penn State Cancer Institute, enhancing access to innovative therapies for patients across the health system. - Collaborate with institutional partners including Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Gyn Oncology, Gastroenterology, and Radiology to advance multidisciplinary cancer care. - Serve as a key system-wide leader in Surgical Oncology across Penn State Health, supporting the integration of cancer surgery services across multiple hospitals and sites. Qualifications - MD, DO, or equivalent degree - Board Certified in General Surgery and completed a fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology, Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery, Breast Surgery, or Endocrine Surgery - Ability to acquire a license to practice in the State of Pennsylvania - Must be able to obtain valid federal and state narcotics certificates - A record of national distinction in surgical oncology research, education, and clinical excellence - Demonstrated success in extramural funding, ideally NIH, and leadership of clinical trials or investigator-initiated research - Proven leadership experience in an academic healthcare environment - Commitment to fostering diversity, collaboration, and academic growth across the missions of patient care, research, and education About Penn State Health Penn State Health Milton S. Unit: School Of Medicine MBU Department: Surgery Mission or goal of unit: The mission of the VCU Division of Surgical Oncology is to both provide the Mid-Atlantic’s most advanced, patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe Surgical Oncology Services, as well as to create the finest training environment for the region’s future Surgical Oncology Specialists. Chief Purpose of This Position in Support of About Mission or Goal: This position is open rank, an early- to mid-career collateral, non-tenure track faculty position in the VCU Surgical Oncology Division. The faculty member should have clinical and research interests that complement and expand on existing expertise in the Division. Clinical and research areas of particular interest should primarily be in the treatment of benign and malignant endocrine diseases. The faculty member should also support the current Division’s expanding efforts to provide excellent oncology surgical support to many of our current regional outreach programs, including Massey Cancer Center. Finally, the faculty member should support the Division’s commitment to teaching Surgery Residents and, Fellows as well as VCU Medical Students. As part of the Massey Cancer Center, an NCI-designated cancer center, our division offers access to cutting-edge research, multidisciplinary collaboration, and a diverse patient population. The successful candidate will contribute to a thriving surgical oncology program known for its innovation, outreach, and commitment to excellence in education and clinical care. Responsibilities Teaching The faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in Surgical Oncology with an emphasis on Endocrine Surgery. Research The faculty member will participate in clinical and/or basic science research relevant to the expanding field of Endocrine Surgery. Research in the field of translational oncology, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or cancer genomics would be preferred. A record of publication in refereed journals or presentations at national meetings is expected. The faculty member is expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations within VCU’s Massey Cancer Center, Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology to achieve these goals. Service The faculty member will serve on University, Health System, and Departmental committees as requested by leadership. They will assist with the recruitment, training, and placement of Residents and Fellows among the varied specialties outlines above. Clinical Faculty member clinical responsibility will be a full- time endocrine clinical practice, including outreach clinics, and bringing novel techniques to benefit patients. Additionally, the faculty member responsibility will be in the care of the Oncology Surgical patients on the MCV campus of VCU, as well as community outreach satellite location(s). They will be responsible for the development of an active endocrine surgical practice, with the support of the Division and Department’s leadership. Minimum Qualifications Board Certification or Eligibility in General Surgery. Advanced training fellowship in Endocrine Surgery or Surgical Oncology with extensive training in Endocrine Surgery.
