Objectives of the Program:

Our goal is to help educate the future leaders of endocrine surgery. Fellows will gain a comprehensive understanding of the work-up, operative management, and post-operative care of patients with endocrine surgical disorders. In addition, fellows will conduct novel clinical and/or basic science research in endocrine surgery. For those fellows who are particularly interested in an academic career, the option of an additional year spent in research is possible. This research year may be spent in basic science, outcomes research, or education research.

Highlights of the Fellowship:

The Columbia University Endocrine Surgery Fellowship offers a high-volume of experience in thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and pancreas surgery. Our annual case volume is as follows: thyroid (>350), parathyroid (>250), adrenal (>40), pancreas (>200), neck dissection (>20). The endocrine surgery fellow will typically perform more than 350 thyroid and parathyroid operations, 20-30 adrenalectomies, 15 neck dissections, and 15 major pancreatic resections during the fellowship. The curriculum is structured to give the fellow graded independence as they progress through the year, functioning much like a junior attending whose responsibilities include managing the Multidisciplinary Thyroid Neoplasia Clinic, staffing operative cases, resident and student education, and clinical research. Participation with the basic science lab effort is possible depending on the career goals of the fellow. Our fellows will complete the year with all of the skills necessary to become a leader in the field. Clinical skills highlighted by the program are instruction and proficiency of ultrasound, fine needle thyroid biopsy, intra-operative laryngeal nerve monitoring, flexible laryngoscopy, minimally invasive techniques, local/regional anesthesia, as well as exposure to transabdominal and posterior retroperitoneal approaches to adrenalectomy. Formal ultrasound certification is sponsored by the fellowship. In addition, the curriculum emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to surgical endocrinopathies with rotations through other teaching faculties including the multiple world-renowned specialists in the Division of Medical Endocrinology who assist in proctoring the Thyroid Neoplasia Clinic and the rotations with the Metabolic Bone Unit, New York Thyroid Center, and Radiologists staffing the endocrine radiology unit. The fellow will attend the multidisciplinary weekly Medical Endocrinology teaching conferences and the weekly Department of Surgery conference.

The fellow has the opportunity to participate in a Multidisciplinary NET Tumor Board, which meets weekly.

If the fellows desire, there is an internal opportunity to engage in a more robust NET experience by participating in the programs HPB Service.

Our AAES Endocrine Surgery Fellow is hired as a "Clinical Instructor" and NOT considered part of a GME-Sponsored program.
