Highlights of the Fellowship:
|
Mayo Clinic emphasizes world class surgical expertise as a cornerstone for delivering multidisciplinary patient centered care. The endocrine surgery fellow will be fully immersed in this experience, working alongside expert endocrine surgeons with a multidisciplinary team to deliver patient centered care that is up to date with the latest guidelines and advances in the field. The fellow will work 1:1 with each of the staff endocrine surgeons at Mayo clinic for extended blocks of time to allow for direct mentorship and to achieve early advances in graduated autonomy. Case exposure includes everything from the most straightforward to the most complex, including care of patients with genetic predispositions for endocrine tumors and pediatric endocrine surgery.
To achieve well rounded training, the endocrine surgery fellow will also have dedicated experiences with expert endocrinologists, radiologists, and endocrine pathologists. Training in neck ultrasonography, ultrasound guided thyroid FNA biopsy, and ablative techniques including thyroid radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and percutaneous ethanol ablation are included.
The Endocrine surgery fellow will receive protected education time on a weekly basis to participate in faculty led teaching, fellow led journal clubs, and M&M conferences. Additionally, the endocrine surgery fellow will be mentored through a research project allowing for presentation at a regional or national surgical conference, and to complete one or more peer reviewed publications. Extensive resources within the division and the department of surgery are available to support research.
The Mayo Clinic Endocrine Surgery Division annually performs approximately 500 thyroid, 500 parathyroid, and over 200 adrenal operations. Additionally, endocrine surgeons routinely perform operations for pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors and paraganglioma. There are a range of surgical approaches utilized including minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, retroperitoneoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, and open surgery.
