Objectives of the Program:

To provide advanced training and research opportunities within the field of Endocrine Surgery. Graduating fellows are expected to understand the multidisciplinary approach to endocrine tumors and disorders, including evaluation and management, operative approach, and follow-up.

Highlights of the Fellowship:

This program is a collaborative program between Endocrine Surgery (Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology) and Head and Neck Surgery (Department of Otolaryngology). The fellow will spend nine months on the Surgical Oncology Breast and Endocrine Service with the Endocrine Surgery faculty (Douglas Evans, MD, Sophie Dream, MD, Tracy Wang, MD, MPH, and Tina Yen, MD, MS) and two months on the Head and Neck Surgery Service with faculty from the Department of Otolaryngology (Bruce Campbell, MD, Becky Massey, MD, Michael Stadler, MD, and Jonathan Zenga, MD). During these months, the fellow will also have exposure to the Voice Clinic and work with Joel Blumin, MD, and Jonathan Bock, MD. One month is spent with participating faculty in the Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Clinical Nutrition.

The fellow will perform over 200 major surgical endocrine cases during the period of surgical training. Cases include, but are not limited to, thyroidectomy and cervical lymph node dissection, minimally invasive parathyroidectomy, reoperative surgery of the neck, and open and minimally invasive (robotic and laparoscopic) adrenalectomy (retroperitoneal and transabdominal approaches). Fellows will also have the opportunity to perform and become proficient in FNA and fiberoptic laryngoscopy. The fellow will have an independent Endocrine Surgery clinic at the Veterans Administration Hospital.

In addition to departmental and institutional conferences, the fellow will participate in the weekly Endocrine Surgery research meeting and will have exposure to the principles of conducting clinical research, scientific communications, surgical education, research ethics and management.
