Objectives of the Program:

To train a surgeon in the clinical care and operative management of patients with endocrine disease.

To provide exposure to and development of academic pursuits. To develop endocrine surgeons who are engaged and can become leaders in the field of academic endocrine surgery.

Highlights of the Fellowship:

We have a busy clinical practice with six full-time endocrine surgeons: Dr. Rebecca Sippel, Dr. David Schneider, Dr. Dawn Elfenbein, Dr. Kristin Long, Dr. Alexander Chiu, and Dr. Courtney Balentine. We perform over >900 endocrine operations a year. Recent fellows have completed between 300-350 cases with extensive exposure in parathyroidectomy (~150, including minimally invasive approaches and reoperative surgery), thyroidectomy for both benign and malignant disease, central and lateral neck dissections (~30-40), and laparoscopic/retoperitoneal/robotic adrenalectomy (~20). In addition, fellows will develop expertise in neck ultrasound, fine needle aspiration, thyroid RFA, and recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring. The fellow will be engaged in the multidisciplinary care of the patient with endocrine disease and will have the opportunity to work with experts in endocrine pathology, nuclear imaging, and medical endocrinology. We have an active multidisciplinary clinic and run a monthly multidisciplinary conference. We hold a weekly case conference and a weekly endocrine teaching conference.

We expect the fellow to be actively engaged in academic pursuits as part of their training. We have a robust endocrine surgery research program which provides outstanding research opportunities for a fellow to establish their academic career. Our research group is supported by departmental statisticians, a database manager, a clinical trials office, and an IRB coordinator. For applicants interested in pursuing additional research training/mentorship in basic, clinical, or health services research, there are a wealth of opportunities available within our department, WISOR (Wisconsin Institute for Surgical Outcomes Research), and ICTR (Institute for Clinical and Translational Research). As a clinical instructor, the fellow will also be actively engaged in the clinical instruction of general surgery residents and medical students.

With regards to their NET experience, fellows have the opportunity to participate in multi-disciplinary Surgical Oncology Tumor Board weekly which includes discussions of NET patients. Fellows participate when NET patients are presented and as often as interested. Fellows can join surgical oncology clinics to participate in the evaluation of patients. Since the university also offers a Surgical Oncology Fellowship, there is minimal opportunity for operative experience with NET/pancreas cases.

Average Thyroid Case Volume: 132
Average Parathyroid Case Volume: 114
Average Adrenal Case Volume: 21

Neuroendocrine Tumors (NET):

Number of operative NET (enteric and pancreatic only) cases per year: 1

Fellows can participate in a Multidisciplinary NET (enteric and pancreatic only) tumor board, which meets weekly.
