Objectives of the Program:

To train a surgeon in the clinical care and operative management of patients with endocrine disease.

To develop endocrine surgeons who have the skills to develop a robust and successful multidisciplinary endocrine surgery clinical program.

Highlights of the Fellowship:

We have a busy clinical practice with six full-time endocrine surgeons: Dr. Rebecca Sippel, Dr. David Schneider, Dr. Louise Davies, Dr. Kristin Long, Dr. Alexander Chiu, and Dr. Courtney Balentine. We perform over >1000 endocrine operations a year. Recent fellows have completed about 300 cases with extensive exposure in parathyroidectomy (~150, including a large volume of reoperative surgery), thyroidectomy for both benign and malignant disease, central and lateral neck dissections (~30-40), and laparoscopic/retoperitoneal/robotic adrenalectomy (~20). In addition, fellows will develop expertise in neck ultrasound, fine needle aspiration, andrecurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring. The fellow will be engaged in the multidisciplinary care of the patient with endocrine disease and will have the opportunity to work with experts in endocrine pathology, nuclear imaging, and medical endocrinology. We have an active multidisciplinary clinic and run a monthly multidisciplinary conference. An endocrine teaching conference is also held weekly. As a clinical instructor, the fellow will also be actively engaged in the clinical instruction of general surgery residents and medical students. This fellow will learn how to successfully build a clinical referral base and develop a streamlined clinic program.

Neuroendocrine Tumors (NET):

Fellows have the opportunity to participate in multi-disciplinary Surgical Oncology Tumor Board weekly which includes discussions of NET patients. Fellows participate when NET patients are presented and as often as interested. Fellows can join surgical oncology clinics to participate in the evaluation of patients. Since the university also offers a Surgical Oncology Fellowship, there is minimal opportunity for operative experience with NET/pancreas cases.

Special Considerations:

The faculty are seeking a Clinical Practice Track fellow who aims to pursue a clinically focused practice in endocrine surgery. Fellows may be interested in doing some research or teaching in their career, but plan for clinical practice to be the main focus of their career.

Fellow applicants should demonstrate:

• A drive to seek out opportunities to enhance and build on their skills
• Team Leadership experience, including multidisciplinary clinical collaboration
• Effective teaching skills, as fellows will be expected to contribute to the education of medical students and residents at the University of Wisconsin
• Demonstrated interest in the field of endocrine surgery, either through research work or local/national service and teaching
• An interest in maintaining involvement in general surgery
• An interest in building a clinical practice in endocrine surgery
• A commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Wellbeing

Fellows are expected to moonlight/cover general surgery call two times a month throughout the academic year. Fellows are compensated per shift covered.

Our AAES Endocrine Surgery Fellow is hired as a "Clinical Instructor" and NOT considered part of a GME-sponsored program.
