Highlights of the Fellowship:
|
UCLA Endocrine Surgery is the leading center for the treatment of endocrine diseases in the Southern California region. The population of our immediate service area is 15 million, and that of our extended service area is 30 million (roughly 1 in 10 Americans). As a referral center for complex and/or reoperative cases, advanced endocrine malignancies, and familial endocrine syndromes, we manage patients from across the United States and abroad.
The fellow will be exposed to a high volume of cases spanning the entire spectrum of complexity. Sample fellow case log:

The Endocrine Surgery faculty (Dr. Michael Yeh, Dr. Avital Harari, Dr. Masha Livhits, Dr. Kyle Zanocco, and Dr. James Wu) complete approximately 900 endocrine cases per year, including thyroidectomy, central and modified radical neck dissection, parathyroidectomy, reoperative thyroid and parathyroid cases, and adrenalectomy (retroperitoneal and transabdominal approaches). The fellow is expected to be involved in roughly one-half of these cases. Fellows will become proficient at performing their own ultrasound and will participate in FNA and laryngoscopy procedures. The fellow also has an opportunity to participate in some advanced MIS and general surgery cases as interested. The fellow will take acute care general surgery call twice per month at Santa Monica-UCLA hospital.
Our robust dedicated Endocrine Surgery team includes an MS3, R1, R4, NP, and patient navigator. Flexibility in the schedule allows the fellow to tailor their schedule to maximize their educational and career goals. This is a 75% clinical, 25% research fellowship. The fellow will operate two full days per week and attend clinic one day per week.
The remaining time will be devoted to research, educational conferences, and career development. Our active, extramurally-funded research program regularly produces high-impact original research publications that influence the practice of endocrine surgery. The fellow will be supported by strong mentoring, full-time statistical expertise, and outstanding medical students. The fellow will participate in weekly research lab meetings and will run the monthly Endocrine Pathology and Endocrine Tumor Board conferences.
